Walking with the Penguins

Ruby perfectly exemplifies the definition of “world traveler.” At almost eighty years old, she now has seven continents and seventy countries under her belt! She recently added Antarctica to her list, a spot that even the most seasoned traveler might not venture.

As a 4th grader in Newfoundland, Canada, Ruby dreamed of traveling the world. Her television career, missionary work, and sense of adventure helped her do just that. Last year she had her sights set on planning a trip to Antarctica. What drew her there? The penguins of course!

Well, it wasn’t JUST the penguins. Ruby was drawn to the vast, unusual landscape. The bottom of the world! The gigantic icebergs and glaciers were something she couldn’t wait to see up close. Ruby and her daughter, Rachel, flew to Ushuaia, Argentina (also known as the “End of the World”) to begin their journey.

They traveled with a group of women from WHOA (Women High on Adventure) and boarded the MS Seaventure, a Polar Latitudes ship. From there they spent eight days exploring the Antarctic, maneuvering through majestic channels and wildlife rich waters. Aboard Zodiac boats, and sometimes a two-person kayak, Ruby and Rachel saw penguins in their natural habitat, pods of humpback whales, leopard seals, soaring snowy albatross, orcas, fin whales, kelp gulls, and cormorants. Hiking among the glaciers they took in some of the most spectacular views.

Rachel even did a TRUE polar plunge! Immersing oneself in the freezing Antarctic waters is not for the faint of heart, and it undoubtedly became a cherished memory for both mother and daughter. The sense of accomplishment that comes with facing such extreme challenges adds an extra layer of fulfillment to the overall experience.

Ruby's passion for travel, combined with her sense of adventure and curiosity about the world, highlights the transformative power of exploration. It's wonderful to see KFM clients like Ruby embracing life and taking on new challenges, even in their later years. Her story is a testament to the idea that age is no barrier to fulfilling one's dreams and experiencing the wonders our planet has to offer!
